Residents Guide to Recycling & Waste Disposal in Lancaster County

KEEP ALL BATTERIES OUT OF TRASH & RECYCLING

Message from LCSWMA: We need the community’s help! Rechargeable batteries containing metals such as lithium and nickel, can spark and explode when damaged. Fires in garbage trucks and processing facilities are on the rise. Help protect our employees, garbage collectors, property, and community.

Rechargeable batteries are found in many common household items including: Power Tools, Toys, Cellphones, Laptops, Watches, Remote Controls, Gaming Devices, Electric Toothbrushes, E-Cigarette and Vape Devices

Visit the township to pick up free battery bags. Once full, place on curb beside trash for Earl Townships Municipal Contracted Hauler to pick up. If you do not have service with Earl Townships Municipal Contracted Hauler you can dispose of batteries at LCSWMAs Drive Thru Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 1299 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, PA, 17603:  Mon. – Fri. 7 am to 4 pm; Sat. 7 am to 11 am or call your trash hauler to verify if they dispose of

Recycling Information

Only the following materials should be placed in your curbside recycling bin:

Corrugated Cardboard: This includes material consisting of a fluted corrugated sheet, like shipping and packing boxes. Flatten all boxes and remove packaging, including Styrofoam, peanuts, bubble wrap, and plastic liners. Do NOT put paperboard (cereal boxes, tissue boxes, shoe boxes), pizza boxes, newsprint, or junk mail in the recycling bin.

Plastic Bottles and Jugs: This includes plastic bottles, jars, jugs and anything else with a neck. Throw away the lids and rinse out any residue. All other plastic material is considered trash. Ignore the numbers, as they don’t indicate if something is recyclable. Do NOT put plastic bags, toys, buckets, packaging, Styrofoam, hosing, furniture, or other plastic items in the bin.

Metal Food and Beverage Cans: This includes all food and beverage cans made from aluminum or steel. Throw away the lids and rinse out any residue. Do NOT put metal hangers, cooking pots and pans or other scrap metal like foil and pie plates in the bin.

Glass Jars and Bottles:  This includes clear, green and brown glass bottles and jars. Throw away the lids and rinse out any residue. Do NOT put light bulbs, dishes, glassware, window or automotive glass, vases or any other glass material in the bin

HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE (HHW) DROP-OFF

Message from LCSWMA: Numerous materials used in the home, garage, and garden are considered household hazardous waste, or HHW for short (see below for a complete list). They can cause serious safety and health problems in transportation and for disposal facilities. These materials should not be placed in your trash. Instead, Lancaster County residents can bring these materials to LCSWMA’s HHW Facility for free. We DO NOT accept household hazardous waste from businesses.

Acceptable HHW Materials: Adhesives, Automotive Fluids (Max 5 Gal. per container), Batteries, Chemistry Sets, Fire Extinguishers, Floor and furniture polish, Fuel, Household chemicals (Ex: Pool Treatments), Household cleaners, Iodine, Lawn Treatments, Mercury items, Paint, rust inhibitors, stains, turpentine, thinners.

Acceptable Electronic Waste (10 items per customer, per day): Desktop computers, Laptops, Monitors, Computer accessories (Ex: Keyboard, mouse, printer, speakers), Televisions, e-Readers, Cameras, Cell phone and accessories, DVD & VCR Players, MP3 Players and Ipods, PDA’s, Gaming consoles, Stereos and accessories.
